scam information

We have been contacted by a number of violin teachers who have received emails similar to those listed below, claiming to be a parent looking for violin lessons for their child, who is staying in this country on holiday.

Similar scams have involved the 'parent' sending a cheque payable for a larger amount (eg., the lessons would cost £500 but a cheque is sent to the sum of £5000, asking the teacher to send back the balance of £4500) - this could be money laundering, or it could be a cheque that bounced.

We would like to urge violinandviola members to ensure that any such email is from a bona fide parent and not either a scam or a money laundering operation.

Some examples are listed below - if we become aware of any more we will post them on this page.

I am Ms Oliver Karen.I contact you on Violin Lesson.Well my  Daughter
(Jullie) is coming to stay with her freind for some couple  of weeks and she
loves playing Violin. I want you to help me  teaching her how to paly
Violin.

So Note: my Daughter Jullie is just a beginner, so please kindly  teach her
well. Also kindly let me know your charges cost per hour  lesson ,inorder
for me to arrange for her payment before her travel.


Please Advise back on
1. The cost for 2 months....January and February 2006.
2. And payment method ( Let me know if you will accept check )

I will want you to give me the price of the tutor for 6 months as I will
want the tutor to hold 3 times in a week and last for 1 hour daily. Note
that my son once had a tutor in January who lost his wife in a car accident
and decided to stop teaching in order to take proper care of his family
after we have already paid him for 6 months tutor.

 Additionally, please give me your address, so that I can have idea of
 where the lessons will be taking place, as we are presently in Belgium,
 but arrangement have been concluded for Paul to come to UK.
